Numbers in Punjabi (0-100)
While growing up and learning Punjabi counting was my least favorite part of it. I have to admit, it still is. It just feels like a bunch of confusing rhyming words but I figured there is some structure to it. Few numbers have to be memorized but after that, there's a pattern. Today I'll share that with you. In this blog post I'll focus on 0-100.
0-20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 99, 100 has to be memorized. These have to be memorized because the prefix and root of these numbers will be used to build upon.

ones place value prefix + tens place value root
The prefixes are marked green and roots are marked orange in the table below.
That probably sounded very complicated but in reality isn't. Lets take 21, 31, 41, 51, 61, 71, 81 and 91 as an example. All of these have the prefix "ik" in common, which is equal to one in Punjabi (also see table above). While the root differs due to tens place value. The root for numbers with 20 is ī which stems from the number 20 ਵੀਹ /vīh/.
57 is an example. 7 + 50 = satt + pañjāh = sat (prefix) + v + ñjā (root) = satvñjā
41 = 1 + 40 = ik + chālī = ik + t + ālī = iktālī
Numbers with 2 in the ones value place, start with b- and not d-, as you have probably already noticed. So be mindful of that while practicing the numbers.

Now you must have noticed the last line of the table with nines. These are an exception. If we take a look at 29, onattī, it ends with -tī as in the root of 30. The root kind of indicated the next whole number for these sets of numbers.
Another example:
39 = prefix 9 + stem of 40 = on + tālī = ontālī
79 = 9 + stem of 80 = oņ + āsī = oņāsī
I hope that was helpful! I know the rules arent't exactly applicable but they are helpful to some extent. Atleast for me they were.
